Early French Immersion Program
Choosing the right learning pathway for your child is an important decision, and we recognize the care and thought that families give when selecting the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board’s Early French Immersion Program. At St. Luke Elementary Catholic School, we are proud to offer a welcoming and supportive environment where students can grow into confident, bilingual learners.
To help guide you, we have outlined answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about our program.
What is French Immersion?
French Immersion is designed for children who are not already fluent in French and begins in Junior Kindergarten. Our classrooms provide a rich, engaging, and play-based learning environment that supports the development of the whole child, with a strong emphasis on early literacy and numeracy.
Students learn French naturally through enjoyable, interactive activities such as songs, rhymes, storytelling, movement, and repetition. By the end of kindergarten, children are typically able to follow routine instructions, understand simple stories, recognize familiar vocabulary, and communicate using short, familiar phrases.
Over time, these immersive experiences help students develop strong fluency in French while also fostering an appreciation for the language and its culture.
Beginning Kindergarten in French Immersion
We strive to make the transition to school a positive and comfortable experience for both children and families. In the spring, families are invited to attend our Welcome to Kindergarten session, where children can begin to familiarize themselves with the school environment.
Our educators take great care in helping each child feel safe, supported, and ready to learn. Very quickly, students become comfortable hearing and responding to French in their daily routines.
How is the Program Structured?
The French Immersion program is thoughtfully designed to support both language development and academic success:
- Kindergarten: Full-day program with a balanced 50/50 split between French and English
- Grades 1–2: 90% French, 10% English (Religion and Family Life)
- Grades 3–6: 70% French, 30% English
- Grades 7–8: 50% French, 50% English
Students begin developing reading and writing skills in French in Kindergarten, with a continued emphasis on building strong oral communication skills. We are also proud to offer continued French learning opportunities at our secondary school, St. Joseph-Scollard Hall.
What About English Language Development?
Formal English instruction begins in Grade 3 and continues throughout the program. Research consistently shows that, for most students, any initial differences in English language development are temporary. By approximately Grade 6, immersion students typically meet or exceed the achievement levels of their peers in English-only programs.
How Can Parents Support Their Child?
Families play an important role in their child’s success, and support at home can make a meaningful difference. The good news is that speaking French is not required to help your child thrive.
You can support your child by:
- Encouraging strong listening and communication skills
- Reading together in English every day and discussing stories
- Listening to your child read in French and celebrating their efforts
- Supporting everyday math skills through simple activities at home
- Exploring French books, music, and media together
Maintaining a positive and encouraging attitude helps build your child’s confidence and love of learning.
